Major in International Business

The international business major is an interdisciplinary degree administered by the Center for Business and Economics that combines courses in business, foreign language, and area studies to assure students adequate preparation for positions with global corporations, banks, government, and other international organizations. Students selecting this major should work closely with the Director of International Business Programs in the CBE. Students must take the following courses in addition to the Business Core.

Required:

  • BUS 375 International Marketing and Management
  • BUS 376 International Finance and Accounting
  • ECO 314 International Economics or ECO 316 Comparative Economic Systems

Electives:

Two courses from the following:

  • ECO 314 International Economics (if not taken as a requirement)
  • ECO 316 Comparative Economic Systems (if not taken as a requirement)
  • BUS 350 Managing Diversity
  • BUS 401 Logistics Seminar
  • BUS 468 Internship in International Business
  • BUS 490 International Business Travel/Study or International Travel/Study courses as designated from any major
  • COM 315 Multicultural Communication
  • PHL 310 Ethics and Business

Foreign Language Requirement:

Foreign language study is an integral component of the international business major. Elmhurst College currently offers language studies in French, German, and Spanish. Other language study outside of Elmhurst College can be arranged through the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and the Director of International Business programs.

In general, students are required to demonstrate a competency in any foreign language equivalent to a 305 level as in FRN 305 (Business French), GRM 305 (Business German), and SPN 305 (Business Spanish). The appropriate number of courses necessary to reach a 305 level in a language will vary according to the amount of previous language courses at a high school or college level and/or bilingual ability.

International Studies:

Variable credit will be awarded for foreign-based study as part of the international business major. Students are strongly encouraged to pursue some form of foreign-based study as part of the international learning experience. It is highly recommended that a student consult with the international business director prior to making arrangements to discuss the various study-abroad options.

Requirements for a CBE Minor with an International Business Major

Three courses in a specialized CBE major (e.g., accounting, finance, logistics and transportation management, management, marketing) as required.

Note: Course minors or concentrations in non-CBE areas (e.g., foreign language, political science and geography) are by interdepartmental arrangement.
